Artist Statement
My name is Rachel Walsh and I am an Irish visual artist.
I make mixed media and sculptural pieces based on the urban fabric of Cork City.
Using historical and contemporary maps and imagery as references I create collage material on paper. I layer the collage material using a process of deconstruction and reconstruction to create maps and ideas for mixed media and sculptural pieces.
The impulse to make this work comes out of an affection for Cork City and a desire to get to know it better. Each area in the city has its own unique quality. I am interested in all the elements that contribute to this quality.
Collage provides a way of layering elements and representing a place as being many things all at the same time. My intention for the work is to provide alternative ways of perceiving Cork City and my hope for the work is that it engages people on the subjects of place and home.
